For the Streets:

“Cass”: Pray for healing and redemption of her brokenness from pain and abuse. For God to really step in as Father for her, but also for some real men to step in and be a father figure in her life. And for her to find her identity in Christ not her past.

“S-Man”: Pray for him to get a break in his pursuit of art, but that he would ultimately learn to depend on God.

“Lopez”: Pray that he would re-surrender his life to God. Pray that God would capture him despite the circumstances and difficulties of life. Pray for him as he grieves the loss of his mom.

Pray for “J’s” salvation.

For strongholds to broken down and the enemy to be defeated.

For the team…

For everyone to move in and by the power and leading of the Spirit.

For everyone’s heart to hunger more after God and to be devoted to personal time with Him.

For everyone to remember they are image-bearers of the God Almighty and to walk in the confidence of His covering.

I could only assume that last night was going to be a good one. Why? Only a few hours earlier I had been informed that a group of kids on a missions trip would be coming out with us…and I was tired, unmotivated, and lacking energy to “host”. That typically means that God’s going to do something great to display his glory in my weakness.

Arriving at the 7-11 parking lot (our new meeting spot because Del Taco has shut down), I saw a massive group standing around Antquan. “Oh my gosh…are you kidding me?” is what I believe I muttered under my breath. Having groups come out with us can actually be very refreshing and bring new energy to what we do…but over 30 teens and a few adults looking very out of place made me very uneasy. Relationships and trust take a long time to build on the street, and naiive one-time visitors can affect our witness and trust with one wrong word or evangelistic approach. And of course we never want to make people feel like they’re being put on display to be rescued by the privileged white kids.

However, that naiivete can also be of great benefit…they will approach people in bold new ways, without prejudice or expectation and often form great bonds. This group had been trained earlier in the week, and practicing sharing their faith in two different contexts each day. They were excited and expecting God to do big things.

When our Refuge service started, about 10 people had come to join us. The group was also helping to run the service this night…with music, a short drama and hip hop dancing. Again, I was apprehensive about the small amp set up for music, and the very large circle taking over the parking lot. So were the security guards who rolled up often, looking suspicious but not saying anything.

But as usual, my concerns were no match for God’s plans, and the hip hop circle went over well and drew in a few more people…causing me to think about a similar idea we’d had a while back and never put into action. Seeing it happen helped me see it might be time to start thinking about implementing that. An interpretive drama followed – a well-portrayed demonstration of Jesus taking our “chains” and setting us free. After some music and a bit more hanging out and pizza-eating, we all sat down on the curb while Antquan shared a short message, expanding on the drama.

Though he didn’t specifically determine groups and ask people to split into them, the teenagers were on it. They formed their own groups quickly and began discussions about all that had just been seen and experienced.

I’m not sure of what took place in each conversation, but I did see many long conversations, prayers, and excitement at the conclusion. As we find out these stories, we can continue on with these planted seeds and relationships even though the teens will be headed back to Dallas soon.

Please also pray for the Broken Hearts teams, as we are few in number right now and need more volunteers and leaders to carry on these relationships and bring our own new excitement to the mission.

Pray for the streets:

For a potential men’s retreat as some of the guys have indicated they want to get back on track.

Daniel – struggling with loneliness since the loss of his mom. He needs Gods presence and a caring community. Also he needs prayer about revenge.

Shane – owns the pawn shop. Pray he’d find something more fulfilling than buying jewelry (Jesus!)

Jeremy – He isn’t feeling that well. Pray also that he would continue to open up to the street team and that he’d find forgiveness in Jesus.

James – He mentioned he feels like he may need a Christian home to get back on track. Pray he would join our men’s Bible study and would seek out other believers through church, etc.

Pray for a couple of men who’s names I don’t know: one that Charlie and Justine ministered to and prayed with and another elderly gentleman who has heart problems. Pray for health and salvation.

Pray for the teams:

Please pray for Godly wisdom and spiritual insight for the friday night “knXshn” teaching team as they go through the book of Matthew.

Also, please pray for Nick and Robin as they follow up with the Hollywood Church Exposure night volunteers. Pray that, if is God’s will, the men who came out on May 21 would receive a deep seated burden to partner with Broken Hearts.

Pray that God would provide a leader for friday nights as Nick plans to take a four month sabbatical beginning in mid-August. Pray, too, for a replacement leader for the Thursday night prayer team.

Lastly, pray for the continued spiritual, emotional, and physical health of the entire team.

Against spiritual warfare – this week on the streets was particularly difficult. Please pray we’d start making spiritual headway and that God would kick out the spirit of distraction.

For Ronny battling all sorts of addiction. At one point a while ago he’d said he wanted to get into the Dream Center, but he continues to be trapped in his habits. Please pray for the miracle of salvation and full restoration.

For Jayden, who says he wants to go to rehab. That he would actually want that change enough to make it happen and get clean.

For our prayer team member Tongayi who has an important audition coming up. He’s been out of work for a while and we’d like to see him employed!

For Bob and Heather. Bob’s uncle Jimmy just passed away a few days ago. They were really close to him and are having a lot of difficulty with this passing. Please pray for comfort and reassurance that God is both good and in control.

Basileia, a Hollywood church plant, one of our supporting churches and the place where we hold our Thursday night prayer meetings, is moving this week. Pray for a smooth transition and for blessing on this new body.

For a strong, consistent Thursday night street team (and more girls!).

Praise:

God continues to keep us safe on the streets. This really ought not to be taken lightly, what with the hour we’re out and the long drive most people take! Let’s thank him for it.

Holly found an apartment! Thank you Jesus!

Mark: A club promoter we’ve seen before. He goes to church, seems to know the Lord, and enjoys spending time with the Broken Hearts team, and even used to do street ministry with his dad. Pray that his walk with Jesus would be strengthened and that he’d drop some habits he’s formed (like occasionally eating “special” cookies…)

Tracy: She was out promoting clubs with Mark. She grew up in the Catholic tradition, but doesn’t have much use for God these days (though she did welcome prayer and allowed the street team to pray with her on Friday night). Pray that she has a tangible encounter with God and would put her trust in Him. Pray for healing.

James: was pretty high the whole night so it was hard to talk to him, but expressed interest in going to Rock Harbor with a team member.

Team: Pray for the overall health and wellness of the whole team. Pray specifically for the Friday night prayer team – that they would be rejuvenated and would have love in their hearts for our friends on the boulevard, even if they don’t get to see them on a regular basis. Pray for Holly as she looks for an apartment in Hollywood and moves within these next few weeks.
